Short answer: 20X buys more capacity, not a different Claude
Anthropic currently lists Claude Max 5X at $100 per month and Max 20X at $200 per month for web subscriptions. Max 5X provides about five times the Pro capacity per session, while Max 20X provides about twenty times Pro capacity per session. Max subscribers also receive priority access to newer models and features, along with access to Claude Code and Cowork.
Neither tier removes limits. Anthropic states that session-based usage resets every five hours and that Max plans also have a weekly limit across models. Other capacity controls may apply. Treat 20X as a larger working allowance, not permission for unlimited continuous use.
Claude Max 5X vs 20X comparison
Mobile pricing can vary by app platform. Actual usage also depends on model, conversation length, attachments, and feature, so no fixed message count can accurately describe every user.
| Category | Max 5X | Max 20X |
|---|---|---|
| Web price | $100/month | $200/month |
| Capacity relative to Pro | About 5X per session | About 20X per session |
| Five-hour session reset | Applies | Applies |
| Weekly limit | Applies across models | Applies across models |
| Best fit | Frequent work across several task types | Daily, sustained collaboration for most work |
What consumes Claude capacity, and who needs each tier?
Long conversations, repeated large-file uploads, complex repositories, sustained Claude Code sessions, and multi-step Cowork tasks generally use more capacity than short questions. Two users with the same number of prompts can reach limits at very different times because their context and tools differ.
You use Claude daily but can divide work into sessions. Your normal mix is writing, research, coding, and document analysis. Pro limits are a regular distraction, but your workflow is not continuously active for most of the day.
You collaborate with Claude throughout the day, maintain several coding or research projects, and repeatedly reach a session limit inside a five-hour window. Waiting has a direct delivery or revenue cost.
Use the Usage page in Claude settings as your evidence. Record the next session reset and weekly reset, then note how often limits stop useful work. This is more reliable than estimating from message count or copying another person’s plan choice.
If you can schedule demanding tasks across the week, 5X may remain sufficient even for professional work. If deadlines require bursts of sustained work and 5X still interrupts them, 20X provides a larger buffer. The value comes from preserving continuity during those peaks.
Billing and plan-change checks
- Confirm whether the subscription is managed on the web or by a mobile app store; prices and change flows may differ.
- Anthropic says an upgrade from a lower to a higher tier is charged on a prorated basis for the remainder of the billing cycle.
- Moving from annual Pro to Max may create an account credit when the remaining Pro balance exceeds the Max price; review the checkout calculation.
- After changing plans, open Settings → Usage and verify the tier and reset information.
- Do not share credentials or buy capacity for resale. Higher limits do not override account and usage rules.
