Short answer: a subscription is not a general third-party API pass
Anthropic says the usage included with Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscriptions is designed for ordinary use of native Claude applications: Claude web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code. For third-party software, tools, or services, the official preferred path is Claude Console API-key authentication or a supported cloud provider, not routing personal-subscription limits through another product.
Even where a paid subscriber with usage credits is permitted to use a particular third-party tool, Anthropic may draw that use from usage credits rather than subscription limits, and the user is responsible for those charges. Misrepresenting a tool’s identity, attempting to route third-party traffic against subscription limits, or exposing personal access to others can violate the applicable rules.
Choose the billing path by how you work
If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY exists in a Claude Code environment, Anthropic says Claude Code asks you to confirm authentication. To use a Claude subscription, follow the official environment-variable guidance. Never commit an API key to code, screenshots, chat, or a public repository.
| What you need | Correct starting point | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Claude web, desktop, or mobile | Personal subscription and account login | A subscription works in every external app |
| Claude Code with subscription login | The official Claude Code subscription-auth flow | An API key present still uses subscription limits |
| Your own product or another service | Console API key or supported cloud provider | Pro includes API credits |
| Supplying a key to an external IDE/service | Encrypted secrets, usage monitoring, scoped access | The recipient can safely store the key without risk |
Sequence that avoids mixed bills and leaked keys
- State the goal: native Claude/Claude Code, or a third-party application/custom product.
- Inspect the signed-in account, organization workspace, and any API-key environment variable.
- For native work, use the subscription route; for integrations, create an API project and billing in Console.
- Use a third party’s secure secret mechanism only, never source code or public configuration.
- Review Console usage and charges after activation; do not merge Claude subscription receipts with API receipts.
If usage looks abnormal, revoke or rotate an exposed API key first, then inspect logs and contact official support. Do not try to repair spending by sharing a personal account or bypassing limits.
Claude subscription and third-party tools FAQ
Does Claude Pro include API credits?
No. A Claude subscription and Claude API/Console are separate access and billing paths.
Can a third-party tool automatically consume my Pro allowance?
Do not assume so. Anthropic prefers API keys, and a permitted case can still consume usage credits.
What happens if Claude Code uses an API key?
It follows the applicable API authentication and billing path; use the live prompt and Console billing as the source of truth.
Can I give an API key to someone or put it in code?
No. A key is a chargeable credential and belongs in protected secrets.
